Commentary

Dror Yikra

Synopsis:

The song speaks about the plea of Israel to G-d to save them from their enemies:

Explanation of Stanzas:

G-d should grant Israel with freedom and keep their good name pure.

A plea that G-d should watch over the Holy Temple and the Heichal.

There is a comparison of the Nation of Israel to a sorek, which is a choice grapevine. G-d is (as if) the planter and just as the planter plants the vine and expects a choice grapevine to flourish, so too G-d expects His choice nation, Israel, to be good and follow the righteous path.

There is an appeal to G-d to hear the cries of Israel in exile.

Israel’s enemies are compared to grapes in a winepress, just as the grapes are stepped upon in a winepress so should G-d suppress the enemies of Israel.

In the song there is mention of Babylon, a nickname of the Arabs.

The composer makes a request in the song, that G-d should trample Babylon, the Arabs that overpowered Israel.

Lyricist

Rebenu Adonim HaLevy ben Levrat, "Dunash"

His name is signed in the song by beginning each of four lines with a different letter of his name.

The Rav (920-990) was born in the city of Baghdad where he lived most of his life. He was educated in the city of Pas, Morocco and we know that he lived in Cordova, Spain along with Reb Hasdai ibn Shafrout and his friend Reb Menahem ben Sruk and was therefore enumerated among the great scholars of Spain.

He was the disciple (and possibly the relative) of HaRav Sadia Gaon and even composed the hymn Doresh Hokhmot in honor of HaRav Sadia.

Rashi and Ibn Ezra mention him in their explanations on the Torah.

Rebenu Danush ben Levrat was a rabbi, judge and composer but was most famous for his research on the Hebrew language and grammar.
